Surya was born to the sage Kashyapa and Aditi, though some accounts name Aditi and the sun‑sage Vivasvan as his parents. He married Sanjna, also called Saranyu, the daughter of the divine craftsman Vishwakarma; she was gentle and tender but could not bear Surya’s blinding brilliance.
To escape, Sanjna fashioned a shadow double, Chhaya, to take her place and fled. Sanjna’s flight led to the birth of children including Yama and Yami, and Surya later married Chhaya. From Surya and Chhaya came Saturn, whose austere nature and the strained family ties added another layer of tension in the household.
