Shani, son of Surya and Chhaya, is feared in Puranic genealogies for his austere gaze and role as dispenser of karmic retribution. When Surya’s wife Sanjna could not endure his brilliance, she left and left her shadow, Chhaya, in her place. Chhaya’s penances in the sun produced Shani, who was dark and solemn by nature. Hurt by Surya’s mockery of his appearance, Shani’s fierce gaze brought suffering on Surya, his chariot stalled and his radiance dimmed, until gods and sages intervened and Surya offered apology.
This Puranic tale (recorded in texts such as the Skanda Purana, Harivamsa/Markandeya traditions, and the Brahma‑Vaivarta) presents Shani as a strict dispenser of karma whose glance can even test the gods.. Tales where Hanuman shields others from Shani’s gaze or rescues him from Ravana end with Shani granting protection to Hanuman’s devotees, emphasizing that devotion and endurance can turn his harsh justice into a boon.
